Nautical Elegance Unveiled: The Pandelela Rinong Aquatic Centre

The Pandelela Rinong Aquatic Centre, completed in 2014, serves as a remarkable testament to architectural brilliance and aquatic excellence in Sarawak. This state-of-the-art facility, constructed to meet international standards, hosted prestigious events like the 2016 Malaysian Games (SUKMA) and the 2017 SEA Games. Formerly named the Sarawak Aquatic Centre, it was graciously renamed by the Sarawak government in recognition of the outstanding achievements of diving queen Pandelela Rinong at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

Architectural thoughts by PDC Design Group

Crafted by the visionary PDC Design Group, the group embraced the challenge of seamlessly integrating this aquatic center with the Sarawak Sports Complex. The aim was to design a facility that not only boasts state-of-the-art features for elite divers and swimmers but also visually harmonizes with the surrounding environment. Inspired by the site context and neighbouring stadiums, the design incorporates curvilinear forms that mimic the fluidity of water, with ripples and bubble elements strategically woven throughout the complex. This infusion of a nautical aesthetic results in a stunning aquatic center housing three competition pools that comply with the International Swimming Federation (FINA) Facilities Rules 2013-2017 and are certified by the Amateur Swimming Union of Malaysia (ASUM). With a grandstand accommodating 2070 spectators, The Pandelela Rinong Aquatic Centre is well-equipped to efficiently host international aquatic competitions.

Completed ahead of schedule and within budget to host the 2016 Malaysian Games (SUKMA) and subsequent FINA championships, the aquatic center is now open to the public, enhancing the utilization of its facilities and elevating the standard of water sports in Sarawak.

Roofing and Coated Steel Selection: Balancing Resilient and Aesthetic Needs

The intricate roof design of the Pandelela Rinong Aquatic Centre comes to life through the UNILOK® Roof System by United G.I. Products Sdn Bhd. This concealed fixed steel roofing system, with its wide cover width, offers both economic efficiency and quick installation. Each roofing sheet spans over 80 meters without end lapping, swiftly bringing the curvilinear roof to life, contributing a dynamic visual element to the overall roofline.

The vibrant aquatic theme finds its perfect expression in COLORBOND® ULTRA MATT Steel in Aquatic Matt, a subdued green hue enhancing the overall visual appeal of the aquatic center. Beyond aesthetics, COLORBOND® ULTRA MATT Steel, with AZ200 coating mass, stands as the optimal choice of roof substrate, capable of withstanding the high humidity and chlorine vapor within the aquatic center, ensuring roof durability, and minimizing maintenance in the long run.

The Pandelela Rinong Aquatic Centre exemplifies the successful fusion of form and function, seamlessly aligning aesthetics with operational excellence. This aquatic marvel not only symbolizes architectural elegance but also pledges to remain a premier venue for international aquatic competitions in the years to come.
