Redesigning for Resilience: A Modern Workshop for Steel Manufacturing Excellence

Our client is involved in steel manufacturing industry which some of their products includes wire mesh and other steel fabrication. The production include the use of conveyor belt and conveyor roller. We were tasked to make a workshop with international standard, to accommodate and improving production process of in the workshop, and office for administration purposes while creating a comfortable environment for the user.

The existing condition, to summarize, was worn out from many years of use, putting limitation in production line. It's very humid and reliant on artificial lighting to operates. The site is located in west Jakarta, to the west of angle river. This area is planned for small to medium size industrial area such as workshops and warehouses. Positioned nearby the river, the site has history of having many flooding accident, with average flood water level will reach about half a meter from street. In addition to flooding, the site is facing west which the direction wind is consistently coming from, along with the harsh sunlight.

With the data that we have, we start the design process. The massing diagram is mainly our method to response to the problem and requirement for this project. Making sure for building will be able to host the steel manufacturing process, solving the challenges and creating opportunity against the site condition, and most importantly to improve the life quality of the users.

The voids on each floor are pushed inward to create functional spaces for lifting goods. The voids progressively widen on higher floors to facilitate the use of cranes for transporting items and provide additional high workspace areas when needed. This design also enhances airflow circulation within the building.

This project located in an old industrial neighborhood in the middle of the town, also in the dense and high flood risk area of Jakarta. There are three main concerns for this project, namely bright natural daylight, good natural ventilation and zero-maintenance material.

SUN PATH

One of the request also to allowing natural sunlight to come through. Giving opportunity for multiple facade opening, with the need of consideration with the building facing the west side

AIR FLOW

Natural air flow become one of the main request to be achieved in these design process. The wind comes from the west, giving the opportunity for making multiple openings, creating cross-ventilation

WATER LEVEL

The existing area, used to be being flooded because the surrounding condition. The water level reaches 50 cm from above the ground. The condition of the building and street level being on a same level, causing the ground floor inoperable
